Aim To raise the level of strings performance and promote music knowledge and education among teenagers and the youth of Hong Kong by organizing the 2010 Hong Kong Youth Strings Competition, with Preliminary and Final rounds, Music Talks, and district performances of the prize winners with the Hong Kong Southern District Orchestra.

Rules and regulations

  1. Citizens born in 1985 and after, age of 25 or below, without restriction on nationality, are welcome to apply for any group and any grade in this Strings Competition.
  2. Once registration fee is paid , no refund, alteration of competing classes or contestant is allowed.
  3. Contestants can choose more than one group of string instruments in this competition. Each application form can only be used for entry to one group. Contestants can apply for only one grade in each group.
  4. After deadline of application on 30th September 2010, the Competition Committee would send a letter of notification to confirm the contestant’s personal information and details of the Preliminaries. If the notice is still not yet received by mail before 7th October 2010, please make an enquiry via phone or email as soon as possible.
  5. Contestants can choose one piece of music from the pieces provided for Preliminaries and Final, but can also choose another piece to compete in Final afterwards. Photocopies of scores are not allowed. Most of the pieces can be found in the examination scores of the London College of Music and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Please address enquiries to our Competition Committee.
  6. The order of contestants in the competition is decided by our Competition Committee, whose decision is final.
    The Competition Committee reserves the right to alter the schedule. No objection to the marks, result and awards decided by the panel judges will be permitted.
  7. Contestants must bring along their original Hong Kong Identity Document or their latest student card with a photograph and the ‘Letter of Notification’ when joining the competition.
  8. Contestants must observe the rules and regulations of the competition
  9. Adjudicators reserve the right to terminate contestants’ performance if the performance is enough for the panel to come up with a score. There is no need to repeats except for D.C. or D.S. in the piece.
  10. Contestants should bring along their own musical instruments for the competition. Piano will be provided in the competition. Contestants must arrange their own accompaniment (there is no age limit on accompanying musicians). Judges will award no points for competitors without piano accompaniment.
  11. Candidates who apply for the competition before 20th Aug 2010 may also register free of charge for the Strings Master Class held on 26th Aug 2010 at the Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village.
  12. Successful finalists should prepare to perform the prize-giving ceremony on the same evening with piano accompaniment. Only the First Prize Winners of the Open will be invited to perform with the Hong Kong Southern District Orchestra at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui, on 1st January 2011, including two rehearsals on 10th and 17th December 2010. Failure to attend the rehearsals may result in cancellation of the performance at the concert.
  13. All prize-winners in any category should attend the Prize-giving Ceremony of 2010 Hong Kong Youth Strings Competition. The Competition Committee reserves the right to withdraw an award if an invitee fails to attend the ceremony without reasonable cause.
  14. Successful competitors will be invited to give district performances
  15. Our Competition Committee reserves the right to alter, add or delete the rules, regulations, awards and performance schedules without prior notice.
